Since first discovering them back in 2021 , I’ve made multiple trips up the valley to partake of Leadville’s highly entertaining fat bike trails.
Leadville takes winter seriously. Good thing too, because at 10,000 feet if winter can be considered a guest, it comes early, stays late and in between can get rather surly. But if you, like me, love human-powered outdoor winter activities, Leadville has just about everything you could ask for. Here in Salida we’re basking in sunshine; much of the snow from the past few weeks has melted off, while just an hour up the road winter’s grip is solid. Elevation my friends.
Since I went to some length back in 2021 to document my Leadville ride, I won’t rehash all those details. This time around I’m going to focus on the Timberline Trail system that winds through the woods on the grounds of Colorado Mountain College.
As a warm up, I accessed the Timberline Trails via the Mineral Belt, the wide multi-purpose trail that loops around Leadville.
Of course, one must occasionally stop to take in the view and check out the history. Technology, new and old.
This time around I’ve added some moving pictures to provide a more immersive feel for what it’s like to fat bike in snow. So sit back and enjoy.
And since it’s that time of year, I’d like to wish everyone who occasionally stops by this little corner of the Internet happy holidays. To jump start all those warm feelings and what not, I offer this genuinely lovely video from Coldplay honoring Dick Van Dyke. Here’s to hoping we’re all still dancing barefoot at 99.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Colorado! Now, how about logging off that computer and handing over one of those Christmas treats?
