Les Tufs

Given the generally lousy snow conditions this ski season, this video seems appropriate.

Have you ever looked up something in a foreign-language-to-English translation dictionary only to have to look it up again in English to understand what it really means? According to my French to English to geologist search, “tufs” in French is “tuff” in English and tuff is a type of rock composed of volcanic ash fused together by heat.  Now, when skiing, hitting rocks is widely accepted as a bad thing.  And with the thin snow this winter, I’ve hit plenty of them.  Not really sure if they were volcanic or not.  But apparently, it’s no big deal.  Just ski right over them.

Of course, it helps if you’re Candide Thovex with more skill in his knit hat than I have in my entire body and, oh yeah, his own sponsor to replace what I’m guessing were the multiple pairs of skis he shredded to get this video.

Bad conditions?  It’s relative.
